چکیده

This project arose out an EPSRC/Unilever funded programme in the mid-1990’s in which we established the overflowing cylinder (OFC) as a platform for studying adsorption kinetics and Marangoni effects in surfactant solutions, using the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (C16TAB) as a model system. Following the success of the earlier project, a new collaborative programme was launched with Dr. Julian Eastoe at Bristol to extend the study to a range of diverse surfactant systems and to develop quantitative models of surfactant adsorption. The Bristol group was tasked with the synthesis of surfactants (including deuterated materials for neutron reflection (NR)) and the measurement of dynamic surface tensions by light scattering and maximum bubble pressure (MBP) measurements. The Oxford group was responsible for laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) and ellipsometry measurements and for the development of theoretical models. NR experiments were carried out jointly.

Nanoscale aggregate structures of trisiloxane surfactants at the solid-liquid interface.

The self-associating structures at the solid-liquid interface of three nonionic trisiloxane surfactants ((CH3)3SiO)2Si(CH3)(CH2)3(OCH2CH2)n OH (n = 6, 8, and 12), or BEn, are studied as a function of substrate properties by atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging and force measurement. These trisiloxane surfactants are known as superwetters, which promote rapid spreading of dilute aqueous solutio...

Mixed monolayer of DPPC and lysine-based cationic surfactants: an investigation into the antimicrobial activity.

In this paper, we report studies which aim to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the antimicrobial activity of three cationic lysine-based surfactants: LLM, LALM, and C6 (LL)2. To this end, a simple membrane model (i.e., 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-phosphatidylcholine, DPPC) was used to explore the monolayer properties at the air/liquid interface. Compression π-A isotherms of mixtures of DPPC/lysine s...

Interfacial water properties in the presence of surfactants.

Water, because of its fundamental role in biology, geology, and many industrial applications and its anomalous behavior compared to that of simple fluids, continues to fascinate and attract extensive scientific interest. Building on previous studies of water in contact with different surfaces, in this study, we report results obtained from molecular dynamics simulations of water near hydrophili...
